Pet sitting might seem like a calm and predictable job—but those of us in the business know better! At Critter Sitter, we’ve seen the quirky, the unexpected, and the downright hilarious. And today, we’re spilling the (anonymous) beans.
From sneaky snack thieves to cats with diva demands, here are just a few of the funny, sweet, and heartwarming stories that remind us why we love what we do.
The Cat Who Required Background Music
Meet “Maestro,” a fluffy feline who would only eat her dinner if classical music was playing in the background. We learned this the hard way after several uneaten meals. A little Vivaldi? Problem solved. She even had a preferred playlist (spoiler: no Wagner). Who are we to question high culture?
The Dog Who Packed His Own Bag
One golden retriever we visited always greeted us at the door with his leash, a chew toy, and… a slipper. Not the same one every time. Just one. As if to say, “I’m ready, but this time, bring this one.”
Turns out, he had a habit of creating his own “go-bag” for walks. We just played along and let him carry it proudly.
The Escape Artist Guinea Pig
You’d think a guinea pig would be an easy pet to sit for, right? Not this one. This little fluffball had a Houdini streak and knew how to unlatch his enclosure door. One sitter walked in to find him sitting triumphantly on top of the dining room table, next to a bowl of baby carrots—still sealed, but clearly his goal.
From then on, he earned the nickname “The Great Pigasus.”
A Surprise Party… for Us
One thoughtful pet parent once arranged for a surprise thank-you note—and treats—for our sitter. Except they forgot to mention it to the sitter. So when they found balloons, a card, and a cupcake waiting for them, they thought they’d walked into someone else’s celebration. Cue confusion, then laughter, then one very grateful snack break.
Cat Cam Star of the Month
Some clients use pet cams. We love them—it keeps everyone connected. One time, a sitter discovered that the homeowner had been watching live and capturing snapshots of her cat’s zoomies, complete with hilarious captions.
“10/10 mid-air jump. Needs more finesse on the landing.”“Meowdel behavior.”Yes, we saved every single one.
Not Just Animals—Plants with Personality
It’s not always pets that make things interesting. We once sat for a home with 27 plants. One required misting twice a day, another needed verbal encouragement (as requested by the owner), and one “didn’t like being touched.” We happily obliged.
We love all kinds of companions.
Why We Love This Job
Sure, it comes with early mornings, muddy paws, and the occasional destroyed roll of toilet paper—but pet sitting is also full of love, laughter, and unforgettable moments. These stories remind us that no two visits are ever the same, and every pet has a personality worth celebrating.
Whether it’s a dog who needs bedtime stories or a parrot that sings showtunes, we’re here for it.
